The company provides a wide range of services \u2013 from the transport of raw materials and goods, through wagon rental and logistics, to the maintenance and repair of rail vehicles. At its repair centres \u2013 including the facility in \u010cesk\u00e9 Bud\u011bjovice \u2013 it also carries out maintenance and repairs of railway sets for external customers. turnings = high waste volume + logistical burden<\/h2><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>During locomotive wheel repairs (steel grades B1\u2013B6T according to the standard), machining turnings are produced. These turnings can have a cross-section of up to 1 \u00d7 20 mm and a length of up to 2 m. In the case of repairs at the Czech Railways Cargo facility in \u010cesk\u00e9 Bud\u011bjovice, approximately 9 tons of such turnings is generated annually.  <\/p>\n<p>The storage of untreated turnings required significant warehouse space, handling, and frequent removal \u2013 logistically and financially inefficient. Unprocessed turnings have an average density of only about 10 kg\/m\u00b3. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:20px;--awb-margin-bottom:5px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><h2><strong>Solution: shredding and increasing density \u2192 efficiency and savings<\/strong><\/h2><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4 fusion-text-no-margin\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:0px;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><p>The company decided to invest in a CASTULIK DR120\/600_18,5kW shredder model <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.castulik.sk\/sheet\/Datasheet_DR120-0-0397_SK+GB.pdf\">DR120-0-0-0397<\/a><\/strong> (a high-performance metal waste shredder). At the end of the work shift, the operator simply loads the turnings into the shredder hopper using carts or forks. After shredding, the turnings are placed into metal pallets, from which they are then regularly transported for recycling.<\/p>\n<p>With this step, the company achieved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>significant reduction in volume \u2013 from the original 10 kg\/m\u00b3 to approx. 100 kg\/m\u00b3 after shredding,<\/li>\n<li>freed up storage space \u2013 equivalent to the size of a hangar,<\/li>\n<li>dramatic cost savings \u2013 reduced expenses for removal and handling of metal waste,<\/li>\n<li>improved waste preparation \u2013 more efficient processing of waste for recycling and reprocessing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><h2>Why it matters to the recycling sector as well<\/h2><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><ul>\n<li>This case shows that even regular maintenance of railway vehicles \u2013 a process not directly linked to the production of metal components \u2013 can generate a significant amount of metal waste.<\/li>\n<li>Thanks to suitable technology (a shredder), waste can be converted into valuable high\u2011density recyclate, reducing both costs and the demands of storage and transport.<\/li>\n<li>This is a practical example of the circular economy in action \u2013 after repair, the metal fully re\u2011enters the recycling chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-4 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><h1>Conclusion \u2013 metal recycling as a responsible and efficient approach<\/h1><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><p>The example of Czech Railways Cargo clearly illustrates that companies generating metal waste \u2013 whether from production, maintenance, or repairs \u2013 can achieve significant savings and improve efficiency by integrating recycling technologies into their processes.
