The waste consisted of plastic components containing steel inserts, metal end fittings, springs, and other metal parts. <\/p>\n<p>The primary objective was to reduce the volume of the waste and prepare it for efficient material recycling. The process needed to ensure: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>significant reduction in waste volume,<\/li>\n<li>release of metal parts from the plastic components,<\/li>\n<li>production of a plastic fraction suitable for further recycling,<\/li>\n<li>reliable separation of ferromagnetic metals using magnetic separation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the same time, the technology had to minimise the need for manual sorting.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Input material<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-11\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:0px;\"><p>The tested material consisted of mixed production waste generated during the manufacture of telescopic mechanisms used in the automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p>The waste stream consisted primarily of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>polyamide tubes,<\/li>\n<li>plastic-metal end fittings,<\/li>\n<li>small plastic components,<\/li>\n<li>steel components,<\/li>\n<li>springs,<\/li>\n<li>and smaller quantities of other metal parts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The largest proportion of the material consisted of polyamide tubes approximately 300 mm long and 30 mm in diameter. The waste also contained metal contaminants intended for subsequent separation.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Technological challenge<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-12\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:0px;\"><p>At first glance, this appeared to be a typical production waste stream. In reality, however, the material consisted of several components with very different mechanical properties. <\/p>\n<p>The main technical challenges included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>steel inserts firmly embedded within plastic components,<\/li>\n<li>plastic-metal end fittings with mechanically joined materials,<\/li>\n<li>springs that could deform during shredding and complicate downstream handling,<\/li>\n<li>non-magnetic metal components that cannot be removed using conventional magnetic separator,<\/li>\n<li>achieving sufficient fragmentation of the plastic components without generating excessive fines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"1810\" data-end=\"1922\">The objective was therefore not simply to reduce the material size, but primarily to liberate the individual metal components so they could be efficiently separated during subsequent processing.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Process analysis<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-13\"><p>The purpose of the process analysis was to determine whether mechanical size reduction could simultaneously reduce the material size and liberate the embedded metal inserts.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis focused on answering the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Would the plastic components be sufficiently broken apart?<\/li>\n<li>Would the metal inserts be released during shredding?<\/li>\n<li>Would the springs create any processing issues?<\/li>\n<li>Would the resulting material be suitable for magnetic separation?<\/li>\n<li>Would the plastic fraction be suitable for further material recycling?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2533\">The objective of the analysis was therefore not to evaluate machine throughput, but to understand the behaviour of the individual components during mechanical processing.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-4 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Shredding trials<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-14\"><p>The material was processed using a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/castulik.sk\/en\/shredder\/picus_600_15kw\/\"><strong>CASTULIK PICUS<\/strong><\/a> <\/span><\/span>single-shaft shredder fitted with a <strong>20 mm <\/strong>screen.<\/p>\n<p>During the trials, particular attention was paid to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>material feeding stability,<\/li>\n<li>shredding performance,<\/li>\n<li>fragmentation of the plastic components,<\/li>\n<li>liberation of the metal inserts,<\/li>\n<li>behaviour of the springs,<\/li>\n<li>suitability of the output material for subsequent magnetic separation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Machine throughput was not evaluated during the trials. The material was fed gradually to allow detailed observation of the behaviour of each individual component.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-5 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Technical observations<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-6 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Fragmentation of the polyamide tubes<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-15\"><p>The polyamide tubes were consistently reduced to the required particle size without any significant operational issues.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-7 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Liberation of the metal inserts<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-16\"><p>Most of the steel inserts were naturally released from the plastic components during mechanical processing.<\/p>\n<p>This proved to be the key prerequisite for successful magnetic separation.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-8 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Behaviour of the springs<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-17\"><p>The springs separated from the plastic components during shredding. However, some remained elongated after processing.<\/p>\n<p>Their shape may influence downstream screening or material conveying and should therefore be considered when designing the complete processing system.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-9 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Non-magnetic stainless steel<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-18\"><p>The analysis revealed that one of the components was manufactured from non-magnetic stainless steel.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, this component cannot be recovered using magnetic separation.<\/p>\n<p>Where maximum plastic purity is required, an additional separation stage should be considered, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an eddy current separator,<\/li>\n<li>optical sorting,<\/li>\n<li>manual quality control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-10 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Volume reduction<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-19\"><p>Mechanical shredding significantly reduced the material volume, simplifying both handling and downstream logistics.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-11 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" analysis confirmed the technical suitability of the proposed processing method.<\/p>\n<p>The trials demonstrated:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reliable shredding of the polyamide tubes,<\/li>\n<li>fragmentation of the plastic end fittings,<\/li>\n<li>liberation of the majority of the steel inserts,<\/li>\n<li>significant volume reduction,<\/li>\n<li>production of a material suitable for magnetic separation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ferromagnetic components were successfully recovered using magnetic separation.<\/p>\n<p>The only limitation was the presence of non-magnetic stainless steel components, which require an additional separation step.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-12 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Recommended technological process<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-21\"><p>Based on the trial results, the following processing sequence is recommended:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mechanical shredding of the mixed production waste.<\/li>\n<li>Magnetic separation of the liberated ferromagnetic components.<\/li>\n<li>Collection of the plastic fraction for further material recycling.<\/li>\n<li>Where a higher purity plastic fraction is required, the process can be supplemented with:\n<ul>\n<li>an eddy current separator,<\/li>\n<li>optical sorting,<\/li>\n<li>or manual removal of the remaining non-magnetic metal components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This process significantly reduces the volume of stored waste, automates the recovery of ferromagnetic components and improves the quality of the plastic fraction intended for recycling.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-13 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:40px;--awb-margin-bottom:20px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:32px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.2;\"><strong>Technical conclusion<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-22\"><p>The trials confirmed that mechanical shredding is an effective first step in processing this type of automotive production waste.<\/p>\n<p>During shredding, the plastic components were effectively fragmented, releasing the majority of the embedded steel inserts and enabling their automatic separation by a magnetic separator.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the process significantly reduced the material volume and prepared the plastic fraction for further material recycling.<\/p>\n<p>The main limitation is the presence of non-magnetic metal components, which cannot be separated using a magnetic separator.
